The PRC will be offering a new online course for Sunday school teachers of children preschool age through 6th grade from September 15 through October 6, 2014. The three week course is for new teachers as well as experienced teachers who want to grow. The course is being offered through the BeADisciple website, one of several programs of the Institute for Discipleship at the United Methodist Church’s Southwestern College. The Institute for Discipleship is “dedicated to providing educational opportunities that nurture and enrich Christian leaders, lay and clergy, for effective living and ministry.”
The title of the course is “IFD340 — Called to Teach” and focuses on teaching as a calling and a ministry. Participants will be able to access the course at their own convenience and will be meeting and interacting with other teachers online as they share the blessings and challenges of teaching children in Sunday school.
Week one will cover faith development and age level characteristics as well as prayer and spiritual practices with children. An overview of the Bible and Church History will be covered during week two. The different types of curriculum available will be presented, along with the negative and positive aspects of each type. During the third week, the course will discuss lesson planning and the teaching environment including physical, spiritual, and social space. Participants will also look at ways to partner with their students’ families and the rest of their congregation in their students’ faith formation.
The cost for the course is $45. You can click here for more information and to register. The course is taught by Debbie Kolacki, senior consultant at PRC and a Certified Christian Educator and Certified Lay Servant in the United Methodist Church.
